Ghost
Memorize a grid of emojis, then spot the missing one. How many rounds can you survive?
About PlayMemorize Ghost
PlayMemorize Ghost is a visual memory game based on Kim's Game · the classic "look at the tray of objects, then say what was removed" exercise from Rudyard Kipling's 1901 novel Kim, used ever since in military and intelligence training. The browser version replaces the tray with a grid of emojis · memorise it, watch one disappear, pick which one is missing.
Why the reshuffle matters. After the flash, every remaining emoji is shuffled into a fresh position · you can't just spot the empty cell, you have to remember the set of items independent of their layout. That's the actual skill Kim's Game trains · object recall, not spatial bookkeeping · and it's what makes Ghost harder than it first looks.
Smart distractors. The multiple-choice answers are not random emojis · they're drawn from the same category as the items on the grid (so an animal grid offers other animals as distractors, a food grid offers other foods). You can't eliminate by topic; you have to know the specific item that vanished.
Adjustable difficulty. Grid sizes from 2 to 40 emojis cover everything from a toddler-friendly warm-up to a serious working-memory test. Three tempo settings (slow, normal, fast) control the study window · each correct round trims the time a little, so the same difficulty gets tighter as the streak grows.
Trains the same channels as Polyglot and Memory. Ghost reads from the same 25-locale Unicode CLDR emoji-name corpus that Polyglot, Memory, and Backwards use, so playing Ghost in Polish quietly drills your Polish food vocabulary too. Pure visual recall up front; a vocabulary side-effect for free.
Part of the PlayMemorize family of brain-training games. Runs in your browser as a Progressive Web App.
FAQ
-
How does my progress save in Ghost Memory?
Your best streak per (grid size, tempo, category) combination is stored locally in your browser, so an Easy 9-emoji food run keeps its own record separate from a Hard 40-emoji animal run. Sign in to sync the same scores across phone, tablet, and desktop. -
What is Kim's Game?
Kim's Game is a classic observation and memory exercise: you memorise a set of objects, then identify which one was removed. It was first described in Rudyard Kipling's 1901 novel Kim · where the eponymous boy spy is trained to recall trays of objects at a glance · and is still used in intelligence and military training today. PlayMemorize Ghost is the digital version with emojis instead of physical objects. -
Can I play offline?
Yes. PlayMemorize is a Progressive Web App. Once loaded, you can play without an internet connection · every emoji and every translated name is bundled at install time. -
How does the difficulty scale?
The grid size ranges from 2 to 40 emojis. The memorisation window shrinks with each correct round, so the same setting gets tighter as the streak grows. Tempo (slow / normal / fast) sets the starting window. At hard difficulty the answer options are pulled from the same category as the grid, so you cannot eliminate by topic. -
Why does the grid reshuffle after the flash?
Because the point is to remember the set of items, not their position. If the grid stayed put, the answer would just be the empty cell · trivial. Shuffling forces you to compare "what's here now" against "what was here a second ago" without the spatial crutch, which is the real Kim's Game skill.
