About Heads of State

Heads of State is a history and geography game that trains your knowledge of world leaders and their tenures. Each round shows you a country and time period, and you identify the correct head of state from a multiple-choice list. The skill is the connective tissue of history · knowing who was in charge of which country when so the rest of an era's events fit into a coherent picture.

Monarchs, presidents, prime ministers · every major polity. The pool covers heads of government from countries around the world: ancient and modern monarchies, presidential republics, parliamentary democracies, emperors, sultans, caliphs, and other state leaders. Time spans range from antiquity to the present, so a streak run might jump between Augustus Caesar, Elizabeth I, Lincoln, and a contemporary G20 leader in successive rounds.

Why leadership timelines matter. Major events orient against the leaders who decided them. "Industrial Revolution" is a vague abstraction; "Britain under George III, then Victoria" is a sharp timeline. Knowing Marie Antoinette and the Bourbons, Stalin and Khrushchev, Mandela and de Klerk turns historical narrative into something concrete · you can place a war, a revolution, or a treaty against its decision-maker rather than treating it as a free-floating event.

Progressive difficulty. Difficulty 1-3 focuses on modern, well-known figures · recent US presidents, current European monarchs, contemporary heads of state. Difficulty 7-10 expands into deeper history and lesser-known rulers · Byzantine emperors, medieval kings, leaders of small modern republics. Higher difficulty also adds more plausible decoys (rulers from the same country at adjacent eras), so familiarity with the country alone won't carry you.

Deterministic scenarios. Every round is generated from a seed, showing you a specific country-era pair. Same seed always shows the same leader, the same options. Useful for shared study sessions.
