Classify the Era
Classify artworks and objects by their historical era. Distinguish Renaissance from Baroque from Modernist
About Classify the Era
Classify the Era is a cultural-history trainer · each round shows a famous work (a painting, a passage of music, an excerpt of literature) and you classify it by era. Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romantic, Impressionist, Modernist, Cubist, Surrealist, Contemporary · once you can place a work in its period, the rest of its context (why it was made, what it was reacting against) becomes legible.
Cross-medium classification. Historical eras define entire cultures, not just one art form · so the game cycles between visual art, music, and literature. The hard insight is that the same era manifests differently in each medium · Baroque is dramatic chiaroscuro in painting, ornamented counterpoint in music, and elaborate metaphor in literature · but underneath, the same cultural mood. Spotting the era across all three is deeper recognition than spotting it in one.
Why era recognition is the skill, not work memorisation. Memorising "this painting is Renaissance" works for the famous works. Recognising why a work is Renaissance · perspective, anatomical realism, classical references · lets you place new works you've never seen. The post-round reveal explains the markers, so each round teaches the rule, not just the example.
Progressive difficulty. Difficulty 1-3 shows 2-3 era options and uses iconic, unambiguous examples (Mona Lisa is Renaissance; a Pollock drip painting is Abstract Expressionist). Difficulty 7-10 shows up to 6 options and uses transitional or boundary-blurring works · proto-Renaissance Giotto, late-Impressionist Cézanne, the bridge between Romantic and Modernist · where two answers are defensible and you have to pick the more conventional classification.
Deterministic challenges. Every round is generated from a seed, so the same seed always shows the same work and the same era options. Useful for shared classroom sessions and self-paced study schedules.
