What is a pangram?

A word that uses every letter of the grid exactly once. Each grid is guaranteed to contain at least one valid pangram · finding it is the standout play and scores big.

Do I have to find the pangram?

Accepted Answer

No · finding any valid dictionary word scores points. But the pangram is the highest-scoring single word in the grid, and on the larger sizes the pangram bonus can dwarf a dozen short words combined. Worth hunting for once you have the basics down.

How are scores calculated?

Longer words score more · letter count squared by default. So a 3-letter word scores 9, a 5-letter word scores 25, a 7-letter word scores 49. Pangrams get a fixed bonus on top of their square score. The non-linear curve means one long word usually beats many short ones.

How do I find longer words?

Accepted Answer

Look for common prefixes (UN-, RE-, IN-) and suffixes (-ING, -ED, -ER, -LY) on the grid · they often extend short bases into much longer words. Vowel-heavy grids favour long words generally; consonant-heavy grids hide the pangram in unusual letter combinations. Q nearly always partners with U, and X is most useful as a final letter (BOX, FAX, FIX).
