About Backwards Typing

Backwards Typing is Fast Typing's evil twin. The text on screen reads completely normally · left to right, exactly as written · but you must type it in reverse character order, last character first, working back to the opening letter. The highlighting follows you: characters light up green or red from the RIGHT edge of the text leftward, and the cursor marker sits on the next character to type, so you always know where you are in the reversal.

Why it is harder than it sounds. Forward typing runs on muscle memory · your fingers know "the" as one motion. Reversed, every familiar chunk dissolves: you must hold the text in working memory, peel characters off the end one at a time, and suppress the trained forward reflex. That combination · sequence reversal, sustained attention, and inhibition of an automatic habit · is what makes it a genuine brain workout rather than a finger workout.

Three difficulty tiers. Easy gives single common words (reverse "garden" → type "nedrag"). Medium ships one-line poetry and prose quotes with punctuation · the full stop comes FIRST. Hard ramps to whole multi-line stanzas, where you type the line breaks in reverse order too. All three tiers draw from the same 200+ excerpt library as Fast Typing, so you can race the same text both ways.

Scoring. WPM and accuracy work exactly like Fast Typing · the standard 5-characters-per-word convention over elapsed time, with per-character accuracy. Expect your backwards WPM to be a fraction of your forward speed. That is normal: single digits are respectable on Hard, and closing the gap to your forward WPM is the long game.
