About Ancient Wisdom
Ancient Wisdom shows you a well-known proverb, aphorism, or maxim with one word or phrase missing. Pick the completion that finishes the saying, then read a compact context card: the completed line, its meaning, its source with an honest attribution status, the cultural or historical setting, and one relevant extra fact.
Sourced, not invented. Every saying is drawn from a genuinely canonical, public-domain source · the Tao Te Ching, the Analects, Marcus Aurelius, Ecclesiastes, the Delphic maxims, an Upanishad, a documented folk proverb. Nothing is AI-generated and no attribution is dressed up as more certain than the scholarship allows. Where authorship is debated or traditional, the card says so.
Context over trivia. The reward for a correct answer is understanding, not points. The card is deliberately short · enough to place the saying in its tradition and move on.

FAQ
-
What is Ancient Wisdom?
A short game where you complete a famous proverb or maxim with the missing word or phrase, then read a compact, sourced context card explaining its meaning, origin, and how well-attested it is. -
Are the sayings real, or AI-generated?
All real. Every entry comes from a genuinely canonical, public-domain source and is editorially reviewed. Nothing is machine-invented, and disputed or traditional attributions are labelled honestly rather than stated as settled fact. -
What does the attribution status mean?
Confirmed means the saying comes from a documented classical text. Traditional means a genuine folk saying with no single author. Disputed means scholars disagree about who said it. The badge on each context card shows which applies. -
Which traditions are included?
A deliberately diverse set · Chinese (Laozi, Confucius), Roman Stoic (Marcus Aurelius, Seneca), Hebrew wisdom literature, an Upanishad, a Delphic maxim, and traditional Japanese, Persian, and European proverbs. -
Can I print it as a worksheet?
Yes. Ancient Wisdom supports the printable worksheet generator at /worksheets · each saying prints as a fill-in-the-blank multiple-choice question with a clean answer key.
