About PlayMemorize Skinner Box
Skinner Box is a psychology and statistics game about seeing through randomness. You get one big button and a treat tray. Press, watch, press again · sometimes a treat drops, sometimes nothing. After a short experiment you make the call: were the treats following a real rule, or was it pure chance?
How a round works. The box secretly runs one of four regimes: pure chance (every press has the same fixed probability), a fixed-ratio schedule (exactly every Nth press pays out), a fixed-interval schedule (a treat refills on a timer and the next press collects it), or a timing contingency (only presses after a long enough wait pay out). You have a limited press budget and about thirty seconds. Then you judge · on easier settings just "pattern or random?", on harder ones WHICH schedule was running.
What it trains. Hypothesis testing on noisy data. The schedules are the classic reinforcement schedules from B. F. Skinner's operant-conditioning chambers, and the trap is the one Skinner documented in pigeons and casinos alike: our brains find patterns in pure chance (apophenia) and miss real rules that don't match our pressing rhythm. Good players vary their behaviour · press fast, press slow, count presses, watch the clock · because a lazy strategy makes two different schedules look identical.
It grows with you. Higher difficulty picks subtler parameters · sparser ratios, longer refill timers, chance rates tuned to mimic a schedule's payout rate · so telling rule from luck genuinely needs more evidence, and deep runs escalate from the binary call to naming the exact schedule.

FAQ
-
What is Skinner Box?
An experimentation game named after B. F. Skinner's operant-conditioning chamber. You press a button with a hidden reward rule, gather evidence, then judge whether the treats followed a real pattern or were pure chance. Correct calls build your streak. -
What patterns can the box run?
Four regimes: pure chance at a fixed rate, fixed-ratio (every Nth press pays), fixed-interval (a treat refills on a timer and the next press collects it), and a timing rule that only rewards presses after a long enough wait. -
What does it teach?
Statistical thinking and a slice of behavioural psychology. Reinforcement schedules explain why slot machines hook people, and apophenia · seeing patterns in randomness · is the bias this game trains you to resist. -
Any strategy tips?
Vary your behaviour. Press quickly in a burst to expose a ratio rule, then wait and press to expose a timer or a patience rule. If treats ignore everything you change, chance becomes the best explanation. -
Does it get harder?
Yes · higher difficulty picks subtler schedules whose payout rates sit close to the random tier, and instead of a simple pattern-or-random call you must name WHICH schedule was running from a line-up.
