Langton's Ant

Una hormiga, dos reglas · del caos a una autopista emergente. Cambia celdas y reproduce el clásico autómata de Langton

Langton's Ant follows two rules: on a white cell it turns right, flips the cell to black, and moves forward; on a black cell it turns left, flips the cell to white, and moves forward. From an empty board, an ordered highway famously emerges after about 10,000 steps.

About Langton's Ant

Langton's Ant is a calm, watchable thought experiment · the two-state cellular automaton devised by Chris Langton in 1986. It belongs to the PlayMemorize Idle Games collection alongside Game of Life and Rule 30: systems that are satisfying to watch, simple to nudge, and faithful to their underlying rules. There is no score and nothing to lose · you set the board and observe what one ant does with two rules.

The rule. A single ant stands on a grid of white and black cells, facing a direction. On a white cell it turns 90° right, flips the cell to black, and moves forward one cell. On a black cell it turns 90° left, flips the cell to white, and moves forward. That is the entire rule set · and from an empty board it produces roughly ten thousand steps of apparent chaos before an ordered diagonal highway suddenly emerges and repeats forever, one of the most famous examples of emergent behaviour in mathematics.

Starting boards. Begin from the canonical empty board, or sprinkle random black cells to see how the ant copes with a noisy world. Tap or click any cell to flip its colour at any time · the ant itself is always drawn as a triangle pointing the way it faces, so you can follow both its position and its heading. The board wraps at the edges, so the highway keeps travelling instead of jamming in a corner.

Controls. Play or pause, step a single move, reset to the current starting board, and set the speed up to a bounded maximum. A running step count and black-cell count are always on screen. The full keyboard works too: Space plays or pauses and the Right arrow steps.

Calm by design. The simulation pauses itself when you switch tabs, and it never auto-animates when your device asks for reduced motion · you simply step the ant by hand instead. It runs entirely in your browser and works offline as part of the PlayMemorize app. Part of the PlayMemorize family.
