Close your eyes first. Before looking at the map below, try saying the mnemonic out loud and picturing each city’s position. Attempted recall - even if you get half wrong - cements memory far better than passive re-reading.
Come back tomorrow. Test yourself again 24 hours from now - that single follow-up session is what moves the list from “I learned it” to “I know it”. Spaced repetition works on city lists the same as everything else.
Why this works: the mnemonic turns a list of ten arbitrary names into a single sentence your brain already treats as one chunk. You’re not memorising ten things - you’re memorising one short phrase with ten hooks hanging off it. That’s how working memory gets leveraged into long-term recall.
Geographic clustering helps too. Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerås and Örebro sit close together around lake Mälaren. Malmö and Helsingborg both hug the southwest coast. Linköping, Norrköping and Jönköping form a triangle in the south-central region. Chunking by region halves what you have to remember.
The order matters. Sweden’s top 10 by population shift occasionally, but the relative ranking has been stable for years. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö are locked in the top three; the rest of the list reshuffles only slightly.
Active recall beats re-reading. You’ll remember the list ten times better by trying to reproduce it from memory than by reading it again. Close this tab, say the mnemonic, then come back and check.
Watch for the Ö trap. Örebro and the three Köping cities (Linköping, Norrköping, Jönköping) look similar and live in the same region. Swap the initial letter and picture each one’s emoji anchor - the castle for Örebro, the plane for Linköping, the thread for Norrköping, the flame for Jönköping. Confusing these is the single most common mistake.
